NY Times recently sat down with makeup and cosmetics mogul Bobbi Brown. They specifically asked her about her hiring techniques and management style. Very interesting read. I concur with many of her ideals.

“When you’re talking to someone, look them in the eye. Always tell the truth. And you have to start at the bottom. I don’t care who you are and what you do, you have to start at the bottom. If there’s a job as a receptionist at a company you would love to work at and there’s nothing else, get that job. And don’t just sit there.
A lot of people have moved up in this company. Be open and be a sponge. I’ve always been a sponge. You’re around really cool, creative people, you see what they’re doing, how they’re dressing, what they’re reading, what their tastes are. I mean that’s what makes someone better at what they do — they’re just open to what’s going on.”

Everybody and their mother is buzzing about Sade’s new album, “Soldier of Love”—the first in over a decade. The New York Times just recently did a great interview with Sade and it offers audio clips! It’s so rare to hear her speak…and it’s so dope. (Sometimes, I feel like I’m listening to Anoma Whittaker!)

A new Japanese brand called Boldstar. A lot of promise in this company! They still need a bit of work in their details, but overall, very nice.

The Boldstar Mid. Both are available at Oki-Ni.

One of the best Nike’s in recent memory: The Lunarwood TZ in collaboration with WoodWood. So much goodness in this design. Reminds me of the early 90s ACG styles but updated with even better fabrics and of course Lunar Midsole technology. (Thanks B!)

From WoodWood’s site: Not only is the LunarWood TZ our first collaborative shoe with Nike, the project also introduces a new Nike hydrid of the Lunar sole and ACG Wildwood. The upper of the light weight sneaker has been treated with a new nano-coating called ion-mask to make it water repellent, and the Lunar sole incorporates the new Nike Dynamic Support technology that adapts to a runner’s gait with each step.
The inspiration for the LunarWood comes from the urban environment and adventures in the night. The final days in Paris. I’m having a splendid time. This is a really beautiful city. Goof friends here. Good food. Good sites. Good city planning. Good transport. That’s really what makes a city inspiring.

This is Frank and Ivy sharing a meal at La Poule au Pot. They own the New Zealand creme-de-la-creme shops Qubic and Quarters. I tried many times, but it’s not possible for Ivy to make a straight face in photos. Although I am impressed by how many stupid faces she has in her repertoire. Frank will be speaking along with yours truly in Melbourne for the Buffet Conference at the end of March.

This was the view from the other side of the table.

Jay is my resident Zagat/Michelin Guide in Paris. At ANY time of the day or night, I can ping him and he can tell me exactly where to get the best baguette, fois gras, roast chicken or tiramisu. He also helps me translate for angry Vélib representatives. But most of his day is spent arguing in French with his partner Greg at their company BKRW. Check them out.

While in Paris, I managed to get in an interview for the forthcoming issue of Reed Pages Magazine. I’ll keep this under wraps for now, but here’s a sneak. We did this shoot on the grounds of (Capsule) Paris. (Capsule) is really the best fashion trade show in the world right now. Hands down. It’s the closest that one can ever come to having a quasi-pleasurable experience in doing one of these trade shows. Props to the BPMW gals for pulling this off over and over and over again.

My second home in Paris: The Rose Bakery. Amazing place for the freshest damn breads and veggies I’ve ever had. Their entire staff seems to be Japanese and British ex-pats so communication is easy and you don’t get the notorious French attitude/service. A major plus.

…They also sell the ingredients for everything they make. So I bought this porridge (aka Oatmeal) from them. It’s from Pimhill Farms…all organic and imported from the UK…it’s excellent.

The Comme Des Garcons “Pocket” store. Essentially a pop-up shop, but I like the name Pocket for a small shop. Clever.

And returning to NYC…a little bit Paris came back with me…in Chinatown of all places.

Hence, we will be taking PRE-ORDERS starting today (2/3/10). Books will be available for pickup on Feb 13. Pre-orders can be made at Reed Space or by calling us.
