TRUTH1585 by MAJOR.

When I was selecting who I wanted to work with for the Truth1585 Project, I knew Washington DC was a place that had to be represented. After all, this is where laws are born. And also where laws fall short. It’s very symbolic to have DC involved in the project in some way. My friends at Major were more than ready to set up. I love this design! It shows how politics often gets in the way of doing what’s right for the people. In fact, I’ll let the fellas from Major tell it in their own words:

Our latest project involves something that’s deeper than design, style, art or commerce.  When Jeff Staple from the Staple Design approached us about Truth1585, we were excited to be involved in such an educational project that can actually help people.
Being in the Nation’s Capitol, we have grown used to all the “politics as usual” activities that surround us. Two major political parties can’t seem to agree on anything nowadays, and the term “bipartisan” support seems like an ideal concept that has become meaningless over the years. Yet, there is one thing that seems to get “bipartisan” support, and that’s the Big Tobacco.  While legislators are busy trying to outlaw smoking in public places, we do not notice the fact that Big Tobacco is still paying the bills for most of these politicians through their lobbying efforts on the Hill, and a slew of big paying work opportunities for them before and after their political careers.  That is precisely why the behavior of smoking is being outlawed, yet manufacturing of cigarettes remain unregulated for the most part.  It’s a typical “let’s penalize the ordinary hard-working Americans for using, but let’s not do anything to the institution that creates the product.”
After some research, we found that a very senior ranking Senator was working to defend the Big Tobacco as their legal counsel before being elected to serve the people. We found numerous articles about how Big Tobacco contributes heavily to many of the political campaigns, especially in the South, so that their business interests are protected in the states like North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.
The fact is that both parties don’t mind the money that Big Tobacco provides for their campaigns or pre/post political careers, and advocacy for the tobacco companies are spread throughout Capitol Hill.  So why not expose that truth with a t-shirt design that depicts both party mascots blowing smokes?  We think that the politicians have been blowing smoke up our collective ass for too long. It’s time to expose the truth.

TRUTH! Thanks Major!

TECH TALE.

McSweeney’s the publisher of the incredible Lucky Peach have some great stories on the site in their Internet Tendency section. One was sent to me being the tech guru and all things trouble-shooting. Check out In Which I Fix My Girlfriend’s Grandparents’ WiFi and Am Hailed as a Conquering Hero by Mike Lacher and when your done take a moment and read the monologue I’m Comic Sans, Asshole.

Brief excerpt:
…And at last the warrior arrived at the Router. It was a dusty black box with an array of shimmering green lights, blinking on and off, as if to taunt him to come any further. The warrior swiftly maneuvered to the rear of the router and verified what he had feared, what he had heard whispered in his ear from spirits beyond: all the cords were securely in place…

TRUTH1585 by REED SPACE.

OK, so I know someone at Reed Space. :)
I definitely had to get Reed involved in the Truth1585 cause! We worked with a handful of the country’s best shops to do messaging shirts centered around the “infamous” tobacco industry. We did a slight “Play” off of a popular tee to create this message about what smoking does to your breath and teeth. Bleh… The shirt is available exclusively at Reed Space in NYC only. Peep the video for more information & open your eyes!
(Hurray to Nico for being the only active smoker involved in this series. Don’t forget, Truth was never about being anti-smoker.  We’re just anti-big-tobacco.)

CONVEYOR BELTS

Remember when you could barely see a picture on the internet. OK now did you ever imagine you’d waste 2:37 of your life to watch what happens with the conveyor belt at your favorite photo shop? Yea… you can stop now or watch it below. Cheers!

Oh. but then there’s the Delta clip of what happens to your luggage…another 2:40…

And here’s the worst offender in time wasting videos clocking in at 7:39 people at the conveyor belt sushi restaurant. And if you thought that was amazing and you want more just search for more on youtube there are a lot of these…

TRUTH1585 by TRUE SF.

Our friends from O.G.-status boutique, True, also contributed their efforts to the Truth1585 cause.
We worked with a handful of the country’s best shops to do messaging shirts centered around the “infamous” tobacco industry. In true street wear culture style, they flipped the existing TRUTH logo with a tagged remix. So smart…so simple. The shirt is available exclusively at True in SF. Peep the video for more information & open your eyes!

HOTEL: THE FOUR SEASONS SEATTLE.

THE FOUR SEASONS SEATTLE
DATES:
1/22/12–1/24/12
COST: $249/night

PROS:
- The staff here knows the PERFECT amount of attentiveness. Not too fake and pushy. Not aloof and lazy. That half smile and nod is all that’s needed. They are there when you need them and invisible when you don’t. It is truly an art form. A  point person standing right outside the elevator reminds me of The Cerulean Tower in Tokyo. This person acts as a delegator for whatever your needs might be.

- The check-in process was extremely smooth and easy. At check-in, they asked what kind of newspaper I wanted in the morning and offered 3 different choices. I asked if I could get a newspaper that was not on their list (The New York Times) and they said they would try to get it. I declined their offer but it was great that they didn’t just say “no”. A nice simple touch. Let’s face it. A hotel is a room with a bed in it. Everything else is gravy on top. The difference between “any” hotel and a “great” hotel is…a nice touch.

- Rooms are excellent in both size and design. Light switches are everywhere you want them to be. And with dimmers where needed. Again, a nice touch. There is ample storage and closet space. You immediately feel right at home—even though I was only staying for 2 nights.

- Wake up call. Yet another extra touch. First off, it’s a human, not a computer that calls you. Second they ask if you them  want to call back in 15 mins so you can get some extra ZZzz. Nice. Catch: She called back in 19 mins. I’m not being an ass here. But if you offer 15—Do 15. 4 minutes can mean the difference between making a flight and missing a flight.

- The TV screen in the bathroom is SICK. Its kind of embedded into the mirror almost like a HUD (heads up display) unit. Yet another beautiful design touch: The TV is also viewable while you are in the shower. These considered design touches are what makes The Four Seasons, The Four Seasons. The bathroom fixtures from Kohler are also excellent.

(Below: view from the shower)

- Internet. Two options here:
$11 for regular speed and a single user.
$15 for higher speed and multiple users (i.e., laptop, phone, tablet).
I’m so torn on the whole charging for internet thing. Many hotels offer free internet. Shouldn’t internet be free these days? On the other hand, if I were a hotel owner, why would I NOT charge for internet? Its money on the table. There’s not a single guest that wouldn’t pay the $8 to sometimes $30 for a day’s internet. I like the tiered service of internet The Four Seasons offers. But why not do a free option? In fact, that’s what I think is the best solution. Hotels should offer a free basic service and then a “power-user” service which features multiple users and higher speeds.

- The room features a great task chair and working desk. It looks like a Knoll Chadwick chair (but it’s not).

- There’s an excellent 24hr gym with an outdoor heated infinity pool overlooking the bay. Complimentary coffee in the gym is…you guessed it…a nice touch. Another added bonus is the cups they serve the coffee—built in cardboard koozie! (But the coffee itself tastes horrible.)

- And this is the best part. EVERYONE knows your name. Wow. I don’t know how they do it. But everywhere you go, people address you by your last name. (“Good evening Mr. Ng”) I’d really like to know how all the staff in the lobby can remember this?? Do they have dossiers in the office with photos of people? It’s so cool though. They make you feel like you own the place.

CONS:
Did I mention the coffee? Haha.
OK there’s not much I can complain about. But let’s nit-pick.
- The in-room Four Seasons magazine is horrible. It has so much potential! Such good printing…So little soul. I can’t tell the ad pages from the editorial pages. It’s just one big circle jerk of luxury brands.

- The toilet seat sucks. It has a bad shape. The kind that makes your butt hurt after a few mins of sitting on it. I find many toilets in Europe to be like this. While we’re on the toilet, I hate the toilet paper too. It’s weak and shreds easily (sorry, TMI).

- L’Occitane is the in-room bathroom amenity. I felt this was an odd choice. As far as brands go, I put L’Occitane a few notches above Lush or Bath and Body Works. I think Four Seasons should upgrade to a better partner in this department.

SCORE (0-5): 4.5
There are brand names that just convey luxury: Rolex. Mercedes Benz. Viking. And The Four Seasons. But with that aired reputation, comes high expectations. The Four Seasons Seattle shines. I highly recommend it and look forward to my next visit.
