LEGO MINDSTORMS CLOCK.

Hans Andersson is a programming and software developer from Sweden. He builds things with Lego Mindstorms kits that he originally bought for his daughters. He’s created a Digital clock with blocks that revolve, its like a flip clock to the next level.

Description from his site tilted twister
I have always been fascinated with time and clocks. Time Twister is my first clock invention.
Time Twister consists of two LEGO Mindstorms bricks communicating via Bluetooth. The master brick keeps track of the time and handles the minute digits. The slave brick handles the hour digits and the second indicator.
Each digit is made up of five layers with black and white tiles layed out in different patterns. Each layer can rotate 360 degrees before it hooks to the next layer. By twisting the top layer back and forth in a specific pattern, you can arrange the layers so that the desired digit is displayed.

Check out the video of the clock in action below!

PLAYING THE RIGHT CARDS.

I didn’t grow up playing baseball, so I understand that it is definitely an acquired taste. But there is something about its history and traditions that I just love. Its image has come under serious fire – the home run chasing, TV ratings obsession of the 90′s, which legalized performance enhancing drugs was a blight on the sport. Yet It is still genuinely America’s game. Just a guy with a round bat trying to hit a round ball. Same as it was a century ago.

The St Louis Cardinals just won the world series. This despite sneaking into the playoffs on the last day of the regular season, and with the worst overall record of all the playoff contenders. They were further helped by the fact the National League won the all-star game, giving the Cardinals crucial home field advantage in the final series (this is a move the NBA could look at to actually make the all-star game mean something).

Despite my previous rants on what’s wrong with the MLP playoff structure, it was hard not to enjoy the Cardinal’s clutch play. Albert Pujols had the single best hitting performance in world series history in game 3. And David Freese lived out the childhood dreams of millions in game 6 with a game tying hit with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning – St Louis would have lost the series if he got out – followed by the game winning home run in the bottom of the 11th inning. This drama gave the game 7 decider its highest TV ratings in almost 8 years.

I liked both views of this historic hit. You only need to watch the first 60 seconds or so.

NOT TOKYO. BUT KAMAKURA.

In my twenties, I was able to find everything in Tokyo. Now as I enter my late thirties, I’m finding that I’m not in tune with the vibes in Tokyo. Everyone I see seems … well… busier. Hustlers. It’s probably because I’ve now become a mother and have found a comfortable home in an old city called Kamakura.  It is said to be the eastern version of Kyoto with its ancient temples and shrines, historical landmarks, old traditional buildings and cultural festivities all year long. It is also a beach area known as one of the famous surf spots in Japan. Finally, as a Staple family member, I have to mention that it’s the home of the Hato Sablé or the Pigeon Cookies.

If ever in Japan, I highly recommend visiting Kamakura.

DJ SOULSCAPE IN NEW YORK.

Since picking up his first set of turntables as a teenager, Min Jun Park, aka DJ Soulscape, has actively pursued the art of turntablism, and musical production, all while amassing an incredible collection of vinyl records. His first solo project, 180g Beats (2001), was released when he was merely 21 years old, and has been hailed as one of the 100 greatest albums in modern Korean music history.

After following up with a series of acclaimed mixtapes, and providing beats for both hip-hop and pop acts, his vast knowledge of music has led him to work with mainstream corporate conglomerates like CJ Entertainment and Shinsegae Department Store Franchise, as well as doing scores for Korean films such as The Aggressives. His most recent endeavors included the much-lauded The Sound of Seoul and More Sound of Seoul projects. Along with an experimental single comprised of samples drawn from traditional Korean medleys known as “The Theme for the Han River,” he wishes to complete an album entirely constructed upon Korean samples.

Soulscape has recently been featured in the NY Times and was tabbed for Vice and Intel’s The Creator’s Project. Check out a snippet from The Sound Of Seoul below.
