Sunday was the LA premiere of Urbanized, Director Gary Hustwit’s third installment of his design film trilogy, following Helvetica, and Objectified. For me It seemed like a long wait for this movie to come out, but it was well worth it. A little tougher subject matter than the others, it deals with Urban Planning, and how we are to deal with cities’ growing population in the years to come. Not the sexiest sounding topic, but the film is filled with examples of innovative thinking, such as Chilean architect Alejandro Arevena describing his idea for half-finishing the dwellings of the housing project in Lo Barnechea, allowing the residents to adapt the spaces to their needs and budgets over time. Or creative adaptation, like the former mayor of Bogota Colombia, who introduced a subway-like bus system based on the one in Curitiba, Brazil. These and more examples from all over the world apply to the many cities that aren’t featured, and hope to make us think about how to change our own for the better. Check for a screening in your city, or if you are a real design geek, consider a road trip.
