Last month I was at the UN where I heard the person responsible for Coca-Cola’s philanthropic efforts speak. She said Coke was focusing on microfinance and clean water. I am a huge clean water advocate but the question that lingered over my mind the entire time was why would Coke, whose sole business is profits, and who owns MULTIPLE bottled water companies worldwide be interested in bringing clean water (and by this we always mean wells and purification systems, not bottles of Evian) to third world countries?
…because its the right thing to do. Some companies realize they have a larger responsibility to this world than keeping their share holders happy.
It’s much better for everyone involved if companies like Coke help people in third world countries gain basic access to clean drinking water, giving them a choice between free clean drinking water, or bottled water sold by Coke.
