I just spent the day riding my bike around Nolita on a quest for good eats. After having homemade sausage lasagna for lunch at Rubirosa, my initial plan was to walk across the street to have some coffee cake along with a Strongtree macchiato at Torrisi Italian Specialties. The tiny place was packed with a long line, so while waiting to order I watched the guys behind the counter assemble these amazingly meaty sandwiches with ham, salami, soppressata, and provolone on seeded Italian bread. The idea of having dessert slowly turned into “I think I have room to try one of these heroes.” So here it is, the Italian Combo hero. Worth the 30-minute wait on a lazy Saturday afternoon, with the sun shining bright and a cup of bitter coffee to keep my taste buds pre-occupied. Would I go out of my way for this sandwich? Hmmm…I don’t think so. Meaty yes, but dry with too little hot peppers, for my taste. However, the all around experience has me wanting to go back and check out the rest of the menu. I’ll let you know how that goes.
