I am super excited for Tuesday night’s launch of the Oakley x Staple Collection. Again, this is all part of our “History of Oakley by Staple Design” project that we’ve been working on for over a year now with them. We have created a 6-piece collection that will drop throughout the year. Each style is reflective of a sport that Oakley has some major influence in. Oakley started as a company dedicated to improving the performance of the athlete and 35 years later, nothing has changed. The ethics and mentality exhibited at Oakley are rarely seen in any industry. Their dedication borders on sheer insanity! (I’ve seen it first hand.)
SO! Two styles will be available tomorrow night (7/13/10) at Reed Space during the launch: The Eyeshade and The Radar. The Eyeshade is inspired by tennis and The Radar is inspired by golf. Two sports where optics are critical.
THE EYESHADE: The original spec from 1984! The entire frame is tennis ball fuzz which is electro-statically adhered to the plastic. Adjustable ear stems. Comes with 2 interchangeable lens. One is laser-etched Emerald Iridium with tennis court inspired lines, the other is a clean Grey tint. Both lenses are for medium to bright light and truer color perception. It features an Iridium® coating to reduce glare—excellent in hot, sunny conditions. 150 pcs made for the whole world—top-tier Oakley accounts only.
THE EYESHADE(アイシェード):1984年のオリジナルスペック!
The RADAR: This bad boy features Oakley HYDROPHOBIC™, a permanent lens coating that prevents rain and sweat from building up on the lens. It also repels skin oils and other contaminates, so the lens is smudge resistant and easy to keep clean. It even eliminates static electricity, so dirt and dust particles won’t cling. Golf inspired all over graphic design and colors. The graphic is a hydrographic film print. Yellow lens provides high contrast that increases visual acuity in extremely flat to low light conditions. The Radar will be available in most Oakley flagship stores.

The other 4 styles drop in August and September. The RazorBlade, The Jawbone, The Holbrook and The Frogskin will be available for viewing AND pre-order at the event! So the only way you’re gonna see them for now, is by coming by! The RazorBlade, The Jawbone, The Holbrook そして The Frogskin のプレビューとプレオーダーができます!

Wow, what happened to Oakley? First of all Oakely wasn’t inspired by TENNIS for the Eyeshade. Eyeshades were a design copied straight from their own motocross goggle line, the O Frame, which is still in production today. Hell the poster alone doesn’t even show a tennis ball. It shows one of their original MX grips. The guys that used the Eyeshades the most were mx guys who rode bicycles to train/have fun and cyclists themselves. Additionaly, the Radar wasn’t inspired by golf. Who’s writing the press releases at Oakley nowadays? They sure don’t know Oakley history.
Over the years Oakley has lost/alienated many of its original core customers due to things like the re-release and look-like-everyone-else designs. Oakley is barely even seen at motocross and Supercross races.
To the average customer it’s great, they don’t know any better, but to the fans that were there from the beginning it’s so not original.
Why change the frame/earstem designs if it’s supposed to be an homage to Oakley’s history? Bring back the ORIGINAL designs. What a concept. And why go to an outside design house? Aren’t Oakley’s own design people good enough? They’re the ones who designed the stuff in the first place. I’d be pissed if I was them. And seriously, these new designs and colorways (god I hate that term) took a year?? I’m hoping it was more due to mold changes and/or technology that took that kind of time. And limited release? I only stumbled upon this otherwise I would have never even known about it. Oakley used to be cool glasses for the everyday athlete that let us seperate ourselves from the Ray Ban Wayfarer crowd, not from our wallets. Why limited and not back to their roots? At first I thought it would be cool to get a pair of Razorblades but now it’s like why support Oakley when it’s only a status symbol. Yeah I know they meet ANZI, etc., etc. Of course at this point they don’t need to care about that anymore. Now it’s like Oakley is all about the elite crowd. Hell look at the Elite series. $4000.00 sunglasses??? Do they protect me from UVA and UVB rays $4000.00 better than their original sunglasses or any other good brand for that matter? I’m glad they are successful but it would be nice to know they haven’t forgot the core customers that made them who they are today.
Oh and another thing. Why didn’t Oakley launch the “re-release” at it’s So Cal headquarters? There is nothing about this on their own site. Talk about exclusivity…
motocross fan – i FEEL you!!!
! oakley and tennis??? radars and golf???
!
i am a collector from germany specialized in eyeshades and blades from the early years, and i own EVERY version or lens-variant ever made. that sums up to over 32 eyeshades and 51 blades in total, most of them nos with the factory-print on the lenses…
my first oakley-product was the mx/bmx b-2 grip on my hutch proracer in 1983, then came the goggles, the eyeshades and then finally the blades. when i first saw the razor blades around 1988 over here in germany, i had “a bad feeling about it”. to me they were an alarming sign of things to come – i never liked the sleek slits, mumbos and zeros of the early 90s and besides my eyeshades and blades i only own 2(!!!) other oakleys, 2 colourways of the newer radar xl blades.
i totally agree with you, motocross fan: the people that had their hands on this re-release never ever owned an oakley-product before 2005
and i just can´t wait to see all the 25-year-old trendy kids wearing eyeshades pretending they brought them to the streets 26 years ago…
the same eyeshades and blades that covered my eyes ALL THE TIME over the last 25 years (…and always made me stand out from the crowd!) are now going to be the next FROGSKINS – this can´t be really happening, no, never
hey kids, hey OAKLEY – the year is 2010, go and create yourself a NEW own style of sunglasses called EYEBLADES and DO NOT TOUCH THE PAST ANYMORE, alright?
iwant some of the eyeshades are they still for sale?
