I travel quite a bit. And I consider myself a pretty experienced traveler. Ever see George Clooney in “Up In The Air“? His tips are like Travel 101. The secret to stress-free travel is all about routines, systems, efficiency and perks. To know what comes next in the chain of operations is key. Which is why when something is changed or altered in the routine, it makes a noticeable difference. In my last few visits to an airport, such a change has recently occurred. Most who have travelled by air know the speeches you inevitably get from the TSA or the cabin crew on your flight. “All metal objects and jewelry into the bins. Shoes off. No liquids. Laptops out. All cell phones, pagers and iPods out please. Blah. Blah. Blah.” You’ve heard it all before.
BUT. This time was different. They’ve updated the speech! The last sentence had a notable addition. “All cell phones, pagers, iPods and Kindles out please.” KINDLE?! I mean, you can understand how a trademarked name like “iPod” makes it into a government sanctioned speech; it’s ubiquitous. I think pets have iPods now. But KINDLE? Reeeealy? Have Kindles become so popular that they too deserve to be included in the Homeland Security lexicon? I highly doubt it. When I see someone rock a Kindle, I am still intrigued. Meaning, it’s still new and interesting. If I’m on the subway, I miiight see ONE person with a Kindle. Conversely, i might see one person WITHOUT the tell-tale white earbuds in their head.
Which got me thinking…imagine Amazon (maker of the Kindle) made a “charitable” donation to the TSA that included the added benefit of including their new product into the security speech. In my opinion, that would be genius. Hey, it got ME thinking…”Wow, are Kindles that popular now? Maybe I really need to explore the idea of getting one. Hmmm. I mean, I’ve had a pager. I have a cell phone. I have a laptop. And I have an iPod. Why is this the one device I am missing?” It really got me thinking! And when people start thinking about your product, they start buying your product. Again, not sure if there is any validity to my hypothesis, but I think it would be pretty amazing. Maybe in the near future you’ll hear TSA announce, “Please place your Pigeon Dunks, Pigeon New Balance and Pigeon Converse into the bin. Please take your Staple Design Jacket off prior to the security checkpoint.” Bet sales would skyrocket…

しかし。今回は違いました。案内が更新されていました！最後の文章が加わりました。「携帯電話、ポケベル、iPodやKindleは出してください。」KINDLE?!「iPod」などの有名なものが政府機関の案内に含まれるのは分かります、至るところに持っている人がいます。今ではペットさえiPodを持つ勢いですから。でもKINDLE? マジで? 国土安全用語にKindleが加わるほど人気でましたか？出たとは思いませんが、いつもKindleを持っている人を見ると、興味が沸きます。つまり、まだ新鮮で珍しいものなのです。地下鉄に乗っていて、Kindleを持っている人を一人見ればいいほうです。逆に、あの白いイヤホンを耳に挿していない人が一人いればいいほうです。
そして、考えてみました．．．もしかするとAmazon(Kindleのメーカー)が運輸保安庁に「慈善的な」寄付をして、その代わりに新しいプロダクトを安全注意案内の中に含まれるようにした。もしそうだとしたら、それは天才的です。僕でさえ、こう考えてしまいました、「へぇ〜、Kindleって今はそんなに人気なの？じゃ、買ってみようかな？だって、ポケベルは持っていたし、携帯は持っている。パソコンも持っているし、iPodも持っている。足りないものはこれだけ？」すごく考えさせられました！それで、人々が自社の商品の事を考えるようになれば、その商品を買うようになります。僕の推理はどこまで合っているか分かりませんが、そうだったら結構すごい事だと思います。もしかすると、運輸保安庁員から「Pigeon Dunk、Pigeon New Balance、Pigeon Converseを別の容器に移してください。Staple Designジャケットを荷物検査所前までに脱いでください。」と言われる日が来るかもしれません。そうしたら、売り上げが急騰するんだろうな．．．

Interesting… I think there is something worked out with the Airport and Corps, cause it would be alot simpler for them to just say “electronic devices”….
Kindles have no backlight… Weak!
