So the main reason for my 30hr voyage to Australia was for a speaking engagement at this fashion & design exhibition called Buffet. I gotta say, this was a thoroughly well-run and on-point operation. The event consists of two parts: a boutique fashion tradeshow and a forum designated for forums and talks. It’s a good mix that makes sense. You’ve got lots of people in the industry gathering at one place; designers, business owners, retailers, marketers, sales people, etc. So instead of just doing “business”, why not have everyone sit and chop it up?
But that’s not all it takes to have a successful event. The other element is the turnout from the public. The hundreds of people that came out were REALLY excited and thirsty to learn and absorb something. It was refreshing, and inspiring to me as well. I think sometimes, I work so hard and constantly have my nose to the grindstone, that I forget to sometimes look up and see the fruits of my labor. It’s really important. People came up to me and showed so much love…And asked all these questions that I never even thought about. It just puts a different perspective on everything. Really big shoutout and props to Andrew M. at Buffet for running the whole show and making sure everything was smooth as silk. 30時間のオーストラリアまでの長旅の目的は、Buffetというファッションとデザインの展示会に出席し、スピーチをする為でした。とても良く運営され、考え抜かれたイベントでした。このイベントは2部構成になっていました：ブティックファッショントレードショーとトークや会議のフォーラム。とてもいい具合のミックスでした。業界の色々な方が一つの場所に集まります：デザイナー、経営者、小売業者、マーケッター、営業などなど。だから、「ビジネス」をするだけではなく、皆で座ってそれについて話し合おうではないか？
でも、それだけがイベントを成功に導きません。もう一つは、人が集まること。集まった数百人もの人々は皆、とても興味を持っていて、何か学びたいという意欲を感じました。それがとても新鮮で、インスパイアされました。時々、一生懸命仕事に集中するあまり、顔を上げて自分の成し得てきた結果を見渡すのを忘れてしまいます。とても大切なことです。たくさんの人が僕の所まで来て、声をかけてくれました。そして考えたこともない質問をしてくれて、すべてを違った視野から考えるようにもなりました。すべてをシルクのようにスムーズに行われるよう取りまとめたBuffetのAndrew M.にbig shoutoutとprops。地元目線からのイベントレポートを読みたい方は、Thirteen Inches blogとFrank/Qubic blogをチェックしよう。

I really like this photo taken by Michael Danischewski. It was taken after I finished dry-running through my keynote in the empty auditorium a few minutes before the crowd was allowed in. I didn’t even know anyone else was in the auditorium; so he has me completely off guard and candid…really a moment in my own thoughts. It’s weird to do public speaking. All this preparation and anticipation is built up for a long period of time. You might have a few weeks to prep for a lecture. And in fact, if you’re just talking about your history, then really, you’ve been preparing your whole life for it. Then you’re on stage for one hour. Hundreds of eyeballs glued to your every word. Then it’s over. The room empties. And you’re alone. It’s a roller coaster of emotions.
Michael Danischewski氏が僕を撮った写真をとても気に入っています。これは、観客が入る数分前の空の講堂で、僕がスピーチのリハーサルをした直後に撮られたものです。講堂に他に人がいるとは知らず、油断していて、ありのままの僕が撮られました．．．自分の思いにふけている瞬間です。講演をするというのは面白いものです。長い時間をかけ、準備と期待が増強されます。しかも、自分の人生について話す場合は、本当に今までの人生がそのものが準備期間だったというわけですから。そして、ステージに一時間立ち。一つ一つの言葉に食い入るように何百の目に見つめられ、そして、終わる。講堂は空になり、一人ぼっちになる。感情のジェットコースターです。

You’ve been a big influence in our small, yet growing venture. Everytime someone asks about our business I awlays refer to your work and how we strive to be like Staple Design.
Just to correct you on one thing though, we’re actuay called Thirteen Itches not inches lol. I know it’s an easy mistake to make and I’m sure if you google thirteen inches you’ll get some inappropriate and unfriendly sites.
