1/18/10 marks the OH-FFICIAL launch of our newest project! I’m amped to announce the launch of The Staple Archives exclusively at Urban Outfitters. Our relationship with UO goes way back actually. I started Staple back in 1997 with hand-printed tees that I made while going to Parsons School of Design. Since then, there has always been a connection between Staple and UO. We’ve always wanted to work together, but often times, a mom and pop boutique that we were really close with had a store location near an Urban Outfitters location and hence there was a conflict of interest with too many retailers in one area.
But I always greatly respected UO as a retail leader, so each season, at all the fashion and trade shows, we would always discuss what things we could potentially do together. Fast forward a fun and ever-eventful 13 years later and now it’s 2010. Well last year, we started to talk about how cool it would be to go back into the archives of Staple and dig out some exciting designs as well as some designs that may have never seen the light of day and “reissue” them exclusively for Urban Outfitters.
It’s really a perfect win for everyone. We’re able to see long gone designs back into the marketplace. Customers who never experienced Staple the first time around now get another chance to. And most importantly, Urban Outfitters and Staple are finally officially working together!
So that’s the thinking. The result? THE STAPLE ARCHIVES. An ongoing collection of Staple items brought out from the vaults of Staple Design.
The Details:
Lets be honest. These tees are not the ACTUAL archival pieces. Otherwise, they might smell really bad. We did our best to recreate the designs in a familiar, faded look to seem as if they were stuck in the bottom of a broom closet and then washed 30 times. The cotton is super soft and immediately feels like your “favorite tee”. The prints are true to the original but have a slightly washed feeling to them. No heavy bulletproof prints. We’ve also changed up the inside labeling. It’s the label from our inventory control system with an approved stamp stating this design is slated for The Staple Archives.

The First Three:
The first 3 designs to roll out are COMPOSITION, WINDOWS95 and PIGEON SKETCH. COMPOSITION (’07) and WINDOWS95 (’04) are classic designs people couldn’t get enough of the first time we put them out. PIGEON SKETCH is a rendering of the original pre-graphic-icon of our (in)famous Pigeon logo. These three are available in-store as well as online. Get ‘em while you can!
最初の3つ:
一番最初に選ばれた3つのデザインはCOMPOSITION、WINDOWSS95とPIGEON SKETCHです。COMPOSITION(’07)とWINDOWSS95(’04)は発売した当初、大好評で話題もちきりのデザインでした。PIGEON SKETCHは(悪名高い)、有名なグラフィックアイコンになる前のピジョンロゴをモチーフにしました。この3型は店舗でもオンラインでも入手できます。お買い求めはお早めに!

Looking forward to them, woohoo! I still got my purple, so fresh, so clean tee. d;)
definitely going to pick up some !
I still have my purple so fresh so clean tee too! and the 5:46 am tee as well.
go jeff go! this stuff looks tiiight
Jeff,
Why no XXL? Is that a UO thing? Shirts look great.
Urban Outfitters x Staple. Get ready for the haters!
Urban Outfitters has been caught numerous times “biting” other designers/photographers/etc ideas and making them their own. I’m sure most reading this post know about the Johnny Cupcakes and the Jim Marshall pic of Johnny Cash flipping the bird “incidents.”
UO president Richard Hayne is a HUGE supporter of the Republican party and right-winger Rick Santorum. Google Rick and find out what an evil man he is.
Poli-tricks aside, I don’t hate Jeff for collab’ing with UO but why? Urban Outfitters SEEMS to be the place that you’d tell us to picket and boycott. Why should we pay THEM $24 for a tee when it’s not their idea? I’d rather pay YOU for the same thing.
Glad that composition shirt is back, recently regretted not getting that first time around (2008?). Just ordered it.
where is the pigeon sketch?
I 100% AGREE with the post about WHY!??
what is the point of all this? fck UO, it is the walmart of ‘streetwear’ clothing.
To go along with johnGEE and anonymous, we’d ask why Staple collaborated with Payless. Now here’s why . . . Jeff knows that the average person/kid cannot afford Staple clothing let alone ANY streetwear. He did this for the common person. I still don’t see why the UO, though.
I’ll just chime in here quickly.
This is my observation, but please correct me if my observation is wrong. Say what you will about UO, but in many many cities in this country and as well in the UK, Urban Outfitters is still the coolest/most relevant store. Think OUTSIDE, NYC, LA, Chi, Boston, etc.
St. Lawrence, Kansas. Boise, Idaho. Nashville, Tennessee, Providence, RI. etc, etc.
Am I wrong here? But I feel UO is the most progressive retail store in A LOT of cities in America.
Ahhhh. Good point above. Us who live in large cities are maybe a bit jaded since we are surrounded by streetwear brands?
Maybe the question should turn towards that it SEEMS UO is very akin to WalMart. UO may be “cool” but that’s only because they aren’t original and very cookie-cutter in what they are presenting as “cool.” There is absolutely no doubt that UO has done much for the fashion scene in America but at what cost?
Think about this . . . . I bet most (if not all) on this will agree that WalMart as a whole is bad and operates as an evil corporation. However, we can thank WalMart for how items are packaged and delivered. For example, WalMart came up with the idea to reduce packaging/plasitic/etc because they needed more product in their deliveries. This translated into EVERY delivery across the US. Also, we may thank WalMart for really spearheading a conscious effort to purchase more green/eco-friendly and organic goods. The same type of ideas could be said about Urban Outfitters.
MY point is that no matter how much “good” UO is doing, there’s no hiding behind the fact that they also do a lot of bad.
He did it for exposure and cash.
They are valid needs when growing a brand and or yourself as an artist.
UO is corny crap but has good sales, it isn’t “core” it isn’t “street” it’s main stream mall corporate fodder…. If you are a pre-teen twit you just wanna a cool shirt and are grazing like a shop-aholic pack mule…. you will buy there…
those of us who love the history of things like CBGB’s used to have to make it all the way to New York to buy the shirt while standing in awe of what had gone on there….BUT you can’t be a self serving fuck and slant CBGB’s for selling it as a brand to UO…I hated it yet was in full understanding of the need for LOOT to keep the joint alive….
UO- does horrific corporate shit, they shred up clothes they don’t sell, they scratch up cd’s they don’t sell, etc. Self serving policies are nasty.
I’ve worked as an artist in many “core” markets and in order for us to have survived we had to debate about things such as “do we sell to pac-sun or does it damage our brand?” 30,000 dollar orders feed you, they pay your rent….etc.
I’m getting redundant…
UO will always be a love hate relationship….Borders is burrying small bookstores everywhere but I just got a big pink CLASH book for 6 bucks….what to do…?
