I recently took a quick trip out to LA for some business. (It’s fast becoming my second home there.) I had the opportunity to stop by the National Landmark that is The Eames House in Pacific Palisades. My bud from New York, Charlie Becker (and his newly wedded wife, Genevieve) does some volunteer work there now so he gave me the grand tour.

My homegirl and long time friend Atsuko Tanaka just sent me this photo she took of a classic Staple Cap. For those who don’t remember, this was the Composition Cap back from about 4 seasons ago. Love the effect she put on it. Atsuko and I go way back. In fact, she took the first press photo of me EVER…back in 1997. Check out her site.

Calling all Trekkies. Calling all Trekkies. The DVD for the most recent chapter in the Star Trek saga drops this Tuesday on 11/17/09. To coincide with this, the good people at Star Trek asked us to bring back the Airwalk Terrain for the occasion. If you recall, we did a all Silver Enterprise Edition for the original film’s release back in May 2009. Those were only available at Reed Space.
Now, we will launch a 3 set collection for the DVD release. Each shoe features three Star Trek delta shield logos (back, front and on the tongue). The Terrain’s are available in the three Star Trek uniform colors of “Engineering” Red, “Command” Gold and “Science” Blue. These will be available not only at Reed Space but also select Payless stores as well as Payless.com. (The Gold’s are online exclusives.) As is the rule with the STPLxAirwalk Collection, nothing will retail for more than 50 bucks. Beam me up!

Amelia Mary Earhart (born July 24, 1897; missing July 2, 1937) was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the National Woman’s Party, and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment.
She disappeared on her final attempt to fly around the world near Howland Island (which in itself is a very interesting story). Howland Island has no economic activity, and is perhaps best known as the island Amelia Earhart never reached. Airstrips built in the late 1930s to accommodate her planned stopover were never used.
I was looking over old photos of Ms. Earhart recently and I was struck by her beauty, confidence and style. Look at these photos. They could easily be mistaken for something a fashion magazine today would do to try and come off as “hip” or “cool”. It was innate for her.
Amelia Mary Earhart（1897年7月24日生まれ、1937年7月2日消息不明）は単独で大西洋の上空を飛行した世界初の女性でした。その他にも数々の記録を作り、自身の飛行体験についてのベストセラー本も出し、国内女性党にとっては要人でり、男女同権修正法案の早くからの支持者でした。彼女は世界一周をしようとした最後の試みでHowland島の近くで消息を絶ちました。（Howland島自体、とても興味深いストーリーがあります。）Howland島は経済活動はまったく無く、Amelia Earhartがたどり着かなかった島として有名な所です。1930年代後半に彼女の一時滞在の為に作られた滑走路は一度も使われる事はありませんでした。
僕は最近Earhartさんの古い写真を見ていて、彼女の美しさと自信とセンスに惹かれました。この写真を見てください。今日のファッション誌にでも載っているような写真で、今でも「イケていて」、「クール」に見えます。彼女が生まれ持ったものなのです。

In the fall of 2008, David Rohde traveled to Afghanistan to do some reporting for a book about the region. He and two Afghan colleagues were kidnapped by the Taliban and held for SEVEN MONTHS. No words can describe how amazing this story. It’s something even the most creative writers at “24” could not conceive. The most surprising things I learned from watching this? Young Taliban guards enjoy American war movies (such Windtalkers and Band of Brothers) just as much as we do. It seems they don’t mind watching the stories of US troops and are just as enthralled by the act of war as we are. They watch American documentaries about the war in the Middle East, both for recon and celebration when their leaders are featured. They also love playing US video games like “Delta Force” but of course, they just go around shooting US troops and helicopters down. And they also hate President Obama much more than they ever hated George W. Bush. Do yourself the favor and watch all 5 videos of Mr. Rohde retelling his experience in deadpan fashion. The story of his seven month capture AND escape are riveting.
2008年秋、David Rohdeはその地域についての本の調査の為にアフガニスタンに旅をしました。彼とアフガン人の同僚二人はタリバンに誘拐され、7ヶ月間拘束されました。この話の凄さは言葉では言い表せません。「２４」のライター達さえも考え付かなかったような話です。でも、これを見て一番驚いた事は？若いタリバン兵士達は僕達と同じくらいアメリカの戦争映画（WindtalkersやBand of Brothersなど）を見るのが好きである事。アメリカ軍の物語を見るのはかまわないらしく、僕達のように戦争映画で興奮します。中東の戦争についてのアメリカのドキュメンタリーを偵察する為だけでなく、彼らのリーダーたちがフィーチャーされると喜びながら観ます。彼らは、「Delta Force」のようなアメリカのビデオゲームをするのも大好きだが、もちろん、ゲームではアメリカ軍やヘリを打ちのめします。そして、彼らはジョージ・ブッシュが大嫌いだったように、オバマ大統領のことも同じくらい嫌いです。Rohde氏が平然と彼のストーリーを語る5つのビデオを見ることをお勧めします。彼の7ヶ月間の拘束と脱出のストーリーは鳥肌ものです。

The Homeland Security task force is to recommend whether to keep, revise or scrap the color-coded terrorism alert system that has been in effect since 2002, months after 9/11. I personally always found this system really dated and somehow Twilight Zoney…like something from a 1970s science fiction drama.
The New York Times recently asked 4 graphic designers to try their hand at rethinking the alerts.
