One of the most surprising things I discovered in Dubai was the art. The level of artwork on display, the active creative community and the burgeoning art gallery scene were all not expected. It actually reminded me a lot of Beijing. And after further thought, that makes a lot of sense. What you have is a similar mixture. A young community that is at once influenced by two very contradicting ways of living. For the Chinese, it was Communism versus the new Chinese way of capitalism. In Dubai, the youth culture is primarily made up of people transported from neighboring Islamic areas like Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Why? It’s simple. Dubai is the most progressive and “westernized” area of the Middle East. If you’re anywhere in the Middle East, you don’t need a visa to move to or live in Dubai. Hence the melting pot. The traditional Islamic thinking coupled with the influx of world cultures makes Dubai a hotbed for creativity.
ドバイにいる時、一番驚いたのはアートでした。展示されていたアートのレベル、活発なクリエーティブなコミュニティーと急成長中のアートギャラリーシーンは予想もしませんでした。けっこう北京と似ているところがありました。よく考えてみると、それもそのはず。似たようなミックスだから。2つの相対する生き方に同時に影響されている若いコミュニティー。中国では、共産主義対新しい中国の資本主義。ドバイの若いカルチャーはイラン、イラク、パキスタン、サウジアラビアなど隣接するイスラム圏の国々からやって来た人々から作られています。なんで？それは簡単。ドバイは中東では一番進歩していて一番西洋化された街だから。出身が中東であれば、ドバイに住むためにビザなどはいりません。このような多文化のるつぼがその結果。伝統的なイスラム思想と世界の文化の流入によりドバイは創造力の温床です。
