September 1st, 2009! Come out and have a good time!
This is a kick off to a September chock-filled with art events at Reed Space. (We have a busy Sept comin up!)
Next Tuesday, in association with LimitedHype, Reed Space is proud to host the Onitsuka Tiger 60th Anniversary and the official global release of “Made In Japan”.
The limited edition magazine, of which 250 boxed editions are available, highlights Onitsuka Tiger’s original sports heritage, vision and evolution, along with its influence as a style icon amongst fashion leaders, athletes and sports fans in Japan, the US and Europe. In Japan, turning 60 is an honor and a time of great celebration and reflection; a time to look back at one’s achievements and plan for the future. Onitsuka Tiger’s founder, the late Kihachiro Onitsuka, was known for his innovative spirit and appreciation for craftsmanship and in honor of these values, Onitsuka Tiger invited like-minded athletes, artists and fashionistas to share their thoughts for Made of Japan. Fusing Japanese heritage with a modern, metropolitan soul, Made of Japan embraces heroes of the past while uncovering tomorrow’s talents and showcases the ever-growing interaction between Japan and the West.
Made of Japan features more than 30 iconic personalities, including artist, Chiharu Shiota, Verbal of the Teriyaki Boyz and former star athletes Dave Cowens and Lasse Virén.

来週の火曜日、LimitedHypeともに、Reed SpaceはOnitsuka Tigerの60周年記念と「Made in Japan」のオフィシャルグローバルリリースを開催します。
この限定版マガジン、限定250部のボックスエディションはOnitsuka Tigerのスポーツのルーツ、ビジョンと進化の過程、そして日本、アメリカ、ヨーロッパのファッションリーダー、アスリートやスポーツファンにスタイルアイコンとしての影響力をハイライトしています。日本では、60歳（還暦）になる事は栄光に当たり、お祝いの時、また、自身の功績を振り返ると共に未来の計画を立てる時でもあります。Onitsuka Tigerの創設者、亡き鬼塚喜八郎氏は革新的なスピリットと職人の技能を高く評価した事で知られ、彼の信念に敬意を表し、同じ考えを重んじるアスリート、アーティスト、ファッションリーダー達にMade of Japanに関わってもらいました。日本の伝統と近代的なメトロポリタン魂を融合させながら、Made of Japanは過去のヒーローに光を当て、明日の才能を掘り出し、増え続ける日本と西洋との相互作用をショーケースしています。

“Waiting to go home” is the theme for this post. It’s a time honored tradition in Tokyo. Unlike NYC, where public transportation runs 24 hours a day (hence, the city that never sleeps), Tokyo trains stop running at about 1am. Which means, if you’re out having a good time, you have two options: Cut the night short at 12:30am and bounce. Or kill time till the trains start back up in the morning! (Taxi’s are ridiculously expensive in Tokyo…US$50 for an average length trip.)
So a common site is young Japanese people killing time in odd nooks and alleyways in the middle of the night.
「家に帰られるまで待つ」が今回のテーマ。東京では列記とした伝統です。公共の交通機関が24時間営業のニューヨーク（だから、眠らない町）とは違い、東京では電車が朝の1時くらいに止まってしまいます。という事は、外で楽しい時間を過ごしていると、2つの選択肢があります：夜の12時半頃に早退して帰る。それとも電車が走り始める朝まで待つ！（東京ではタクシーはふざけた程高い．．．普通の距離で平均50USドル。）
なので、真夜中の裏道や隠れた場所で日本の若者が時間をつぶしている風景がよく見られます。

After a late night of spinning…what’s a hungry DJ to do? Go back to the hotel and sleep it off? Hell no! One word: TSUKIJI! Tsukiji is like the South Street Seaport of Tokyo. It’s where all the fisherman come in with their daily catch. Little restaurants…more like stands, have set up serving fish that is still moving fresh on the table. Best fish you can get your hands in the world. But you have to go at around 4:30-5am. That’s when the fisherman dock. And if you’re not there before 7am, forget it. It’s overrun by tourists.
I came out of DJ retirement in Tokyo and shared the decks with legends DJ Muro and DJ Kensei as well as Romeo from Obey. It was a crazy dope night! Just good vibes and good music from each of us. We each brought our different flavor. So while I was a bit nervous going on stage…I think I did OK. You know just as you’re about to go on stage, there are these butterflies in your stomach. Well I finally figured out a way to suppress them all as I started to play and then of course a ton of friends come into the spot and start waving at me! All them butterflies came roaring back!! Nah but I had a sick time. Since I was the only person repping NYC, I felt I had to bring some hip-hop flavor. I started the night with RZA..into Jay-Z…Nas…More Wu…Mobb…then old school with a lil MC Lyte…Rakim…Kool Moe Dee…Sugar Hill Gang…then brought into some Masters At Work…Jazzy Jeff…DJ Spinna…Shaun Escoffery…Lisa Shaw…Moodymann…Amp Fiddler…Vikter Duplaix and more…
東京で僕はDJ引退から復帰して、伝説のDJ MuroとDJ Kensei、そしてObeyのRomeoと一緒に回すことが出来ました。ヤバイほどドープな夜でした！それぞれからいい音楽といいバイブス。そして、それぞれが違った味を出しました。僕はブースに上がる前は少し緊張していましたが、まあまあ良く出来たと思います。出番の直前になると、緊張が走ります。でも、やっと緊張が解けたと思い、回し始めたら、たくさんの友達が前に立ち、手を振ってきから、また緊張が走ってしまいました！でも、本当に楽しい時間でした。僕しかニューヨークをレップしていなかったので、僕はヒップホップフレーバーを出したかったんです。僕はRZAから始まり、Jay-Z．．．Nas．．．Wuをもう少し．．．Mobb．．．そして、オールドスクールのMC Lyte．．．Rakim．．．Kool Moe Dee．．．Sugar Hill Gang．．．そして、Masters At Work．．．Jazzy Jeff．．．DJ Spinna．．．Shaun Escoffery．．．Lisa Shaw．．．Moodymann．．．Amp Fiddler．．．Vikter Duplaix．．．とその他たくさん．．．

You want to talk about long distance relationships? NYC to JAPAN is 7000 miles! But ironically, some of the people I know in Japan are the closest friends I have. Even if there are meetings galore while I’m in town, not to mention endless shopping, I always make it a point to see some friendly faces.

I always love the everyday observations and oddities that occur on a regular basis in Tokyo. 日常に起こる東京のちょっと変わった出来事や物を観察するのが大好きです。
We called it X-Men Originals. In Japan, the film comes out 9/11 and it will be called X-Men Zero. Haha…doesn’t quote have the same impact. They also renamed the Liam Neeson film “Taken” into “96″ and marketed it like a long-ass episode of “24″. 僕達はこれをX-Menオリジナルと呼びました。でも日本では、9月11日に公開されるこの映画はX-Menゼロと呼ばれます。笑．．．直訳は出来ないのかな。Liam Neeson主演の「Taken」という映画はここでは「96」と邦題で、長すぎる「24」のエピソードのようにマーケティングしていました。
Help me out here. Is LA known for BBQ Chicken and NYC known for Cheese Dogs? Someone at Pringles JP obviously thought so. 誰か説明してください。ロスはBBQチキンが有名で、ニューヨークはチーズドッグが有名なの？Pringlesジャパンではそう思っているようです。
They say “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”. Japanese restaurants and apartments are very small. Often times, the distance between the bathroom and where your guests hang out is only a few centimeters. Hence, the need for a “Flushing Sound” button on toilets. So this way, went you sit and do your business, and inevitably let out some “noises”…you just hit this button to cover up the natural sounds without wasting any water! Way to think eco! 「必要は発明の母」とよく言います。日本のレストランやアパートはとても狭いです。多くの場合、トイレとお客さんがいるところまでの距離が数センチしかありません。だから、この「音姫」ボタンがトイレに付いています。これがあれば、トイレに座って用を足している時に「音」が出たら．．．このボタンが水を無駄にする事なく、音を消してくれます。エコですね！

Speaking of Hiroshi, his new book “Personal Effects” drops next week. I helped out with some translation and the title. It’s gonna be a dope must have collectors item. My new pickup: The Canon Ixy 210IS. I loved the shots my Canon SD880 took, but felt like it was too bulky. This camera is the joint. 12.1 megapixel. Shoots widescreen. And shoots HD Video! All in a package that’s smaller than the beeper I used in middle school. Comes in 3 colors, and I went for the Fire Red. All this for under $250! Cannot be beat. I know everyone these days has a DSLR with a footlong zoom lens…but you actually have to carry around a camera in order to shoot with it. I don’t even wanna lug my G9 around.
新しい購入品：Canon Ixy 210IS。Canon SD880で撮った写真は好きでしたが、ちょっとかさばったので。このカメラは最高です。12.1メガピクセル。ワイドスクリーンの撮影可能。そしてHDビデオまで！その全部の機能が、僕が中学校時代使っていたポケベルより小さなパッケージ入っています。3つのカラーからファイヤーレッドを選びました。これが全て250ドル以下です！最近はみんな30センチの望遠レンズ付きのデジタル一眼レフを持っていますが．．．写真を撮るためには実際にカメラを持ち歩かないといけません。僕はG9も持ち歩きたくないので。
Hypebeast coordinated a sit down with Hiroshi Fujiwara and myself. Nothing specific. Just a chit-chat. It was at first supposed to be specifically centered around Burton iDiom…but the conversation sort of just kept going. Enjoy.
