Because I visit Japan a lot and do lots of business there, I often get asked what is the difference in dealing with Japanese people vs American people. I usually find it difficult to encapsulate it as a general statement, so I usually use anecdotes to try and convey the differences.
One easy way to see it is in the food service business. In America, good service is “supposed” to be initiated because of our standard tipping customs of 12-20%. Of course, we here in The States all know this is a crap shoot. You could easily get the worst service and THEN get yelled at for not leaving a tip. In Japan, there is no tipping allowed…AT ALL. And the service is superb. I dare say perfect. The NY Times wrote an article about this a few months ago and it’s an interesting read. Did you know the word TIP probably originated from the phrase “To Insure Promptitude”?

In Japan, he would be immediately fired and probably banned from the entire industry for the rest of his living days. In America? He’s probably a company poster boy…and will likely get signed to a label and become a huge US pop act.
