It’s kind of a shame to me…
I don’t know why the Chinese are so prone to bootlegging. Not only are we good at making it, but we also love consuming it. I personally do not, but it’s literally everywhere here. Outside of Beijing and Shanghai, you simply cannot get anything legitimate. Even entire cars are bootleg! In a more developed area of town, I managed to get myself into a backroom that was filled with bootleg handbags. These exist in Chinatown NYC as well, but it was on a whole different level here. I noticed that even people who could very easily afford a real Prada handbag or D&G boots actually preferred the fakes. They revel in the negotiating. The screaming. The yelling. The shoving. Maybe I’m too harsh in saying it’s a shame. But I do hate the fact that many Chinese do not see any value in design or craftsmanship. Many times, it’s just about the facade. “This one has an Apple on it and it’s $500. This one also has an Apple on it and it’s $50. The choice is easy…why would I pay 10x more?” I believe in order for China to be really considered a cultural leader in this world, they have to figure out a way to get this mentality flushed out of their system. Right now, they’re just the manufacturers of the world. “Tell me what to make and I’ll make it. For less.” No doubt that China is a financial powerhouse now because of it. That’s fine but what about RESPECT? PRIDE? SUBSTANCE? If somehow, someone can come in and shed light on this and combine it with the positive attributes that the Chinese have (experience, diligence, perseverance) then they could really be something that changes the entire course of the planet.

Agreed, but the Chinese are cut from a different cloth. They believe that things should belong to the people once its made. Thats why intellectual property and physical property is ignored. Everything should be disbursed and shared among the collective.
I will spend 8-10 weeks in Beijing for an internship program, anything cool in the city that you can point me too?
Peas and Carrots
oy, Mr. Taiwan, why you hatin’ the Chinese? The real and the bootlegs are made in the same factory.
I suppose the fall of the dynasty’s in China, and the westernization has lead it down the wrong path? Many of the greatest inventions in the world were because of Chinese, but now it is like you have observed the manufacturers of the world. At what point did one of the world’s greatest inventors become the world’s greatest sheep? Will there ever be a turning point where China will return to it’s original power and intellect? I should state though that power is not a reference to any type of world domination, but a society of social diligence.
Why not you?
Consurmerism is thriving in China. Everyone wants the brand name items, but most people cannot afford them. US$1000/month is considered upper middle class, so put that into perspective, and you can see why dropping $2k for an authentic handbag just doesn’t work. Things are changing, but slowly. It will get there. Just like in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where there is a definite disdain for and ridicule towards fakes now. Give it 5~10 years, China will get there too, but it isn’t up to just someone. When there is no more demand for it, the supply will naturally diminish as well. Interestingly though, a lot of the fake markets cater to tourist and not the locals. So the problem isn’t just a Chinese thing.
