NEW BWAY.

Here’s a peek at the “new look” Broadway that you’ll find in midtown right near Times Square. Basically, some genius urban planner decided to eliminate 3 lanes from Broadway in what is quite possibly, the busiest intersection on Earth. To put what? A faux-green space. Yes…outdoor tables and chairs will be put out so people can enjoy their lattes less than 6 feet from 18-wheelers and taxis whizzing by at 50 mph. Sounds like a great idea to me!

Urban Land Magazine, in their August 2008 publication, has a very interesting article about Place Making. They site the Paris Plage as a keen example of this. Every summer the city of Paris shuts down the express way on the Right Bank of the Seine and transform it into a public ‘beach’. New York’s approach sounds similar. Worth the read.
