“Superdove” by Courtney Humphries.
Why do we see pigeons as lowly urban pests and how did they become such common city dwellers? Courtney Humphries traces the natural history of the pigeon, recounting how these shy birds that once made their homes on the sparse cliffs of sea coasts came to dominate our urban public spaces. While detailing this evolution, Humphries introduces us to synanthropy: The concept that animals can become dependent on humans without ceasing to be wild; they can adapt to the cityscape as if it were a field or a forest.

Although he no longer illustrates children’s books, Tomi Ungerer hasn’t stopped being a “willfully perverse and subversive individualist” — as one of his early teachers once labeled him. Born in 1931 and growing up in Nazi-controlled Alsace, Ungerer’s early drawings were caricatures of the German army — prescient behavior for an artist whose satirical yet riveting images continue to both shock and amuse.
While Ungerer first became famous in the U.S. for producing prize-winning children’s books starting in the 1950s, he has gone on to become equally celebrated among grown-ups for his wildly original erotic drawings. Erotoscope — Taschen’s wonderfully fat new retrospective volume of Tomi Ungerer’s sexy hallucinations — brims with 400 drawings, half of them previously unpublished.
Although Ungerer now lives in Ireland, his career began in the 1950s when he headed to New York to meet the cartoonist Saul Steinberg — after seeing his idol’s work in the New Yorker. Ungerer arrived with a few drawings and $60 and within a year published his first children’s book. Over four decades, he has published some 150 books — both for children as well as their parents….
Ungerer notes in the Erotoscope preface that in the U.S. his children’s books have been “excommunicated,” adding that he has been publicly attacked by librarians for having published both for children as well as adults. Ungerer’s response to the librarians? “Without fucking, no children and without children, you’d all be out of work. I draw the fucking and I draw for the children born as a result!”
As an agent provacateur (not to mention winner in 1998 of the Hans Christian Andersen Prize, the Nobel Prize of children’s publishing) Tomi Ungerer says he loves “to shock. I love putting taboos through the hoops without sparing hypocrisy, showing up the ridiculousness of the human condition.”
