STREETS OF NY.

I settle back into the streets of NY. Trying to beat the jetlag. Trying to understand what this city means to me. Or what I mean to this city. To me, for better or for worse, New York is the only city in the world that is a living organism. You don’t just live in it. It lives in you also.
On my first night back, I’m walking home from dinner and I see WK painting live on the street. Back in 1998, a young student who was hand printing t-shirts at school (yours truly) was walking on Lafayette and Prince one late night. On the corner, he witnessed a crazy frenchman (WK) painting the coolest masked guerilla assassin next to a phone booth. A passerby came along and started into an argument about the ethics of public art, aka graffiti. It got pretty heated before he finally walked off. I stood there kind of as a third person arbitor of the whole thing. After dude left, WK and I met for the first time and we probably kicked it for like an hour that night on that corner. We’ve been friends ever since. It was nice to accidentally recreate that scene this night. Although this time, he was being shot by fans and professional media photographers. It’s funny how times have changed; but in other ways, nothing has changed at all.

Speaking of artists…my friend Mike Ikeda in Japan has recently launched a new website called phofa.net. PHOFA stands for Phenomenon Of Art. And as you might guess, the site is entirely dedicated to the progession of independent artists. It also has a cool blog section featuring blogs from artists like Matzu MTP, Maya Maxx, Simon Taylor, Code;C and more…

My Blackberry Pearl died. RIP you piece of crap. I’m really suprised. I NEVER break phones. (Except for that Sidekick 1 which was a real piece of shit.) So I was trying on some shorts at Firmament. The phone slips out of my pocket and falls not 2 feet from above. And its completely dead! I now kneel before you lord and pray for the arrival of iPhone. I know this is simply a sign from Steve Jobs himself.
